The Artistry of Gynecomastia
Look and feel strong and masculine

Despite breasts being a feminine characteristic, there are many reasons why men can develop breast tissue. Gynecomastia is the development of breast gland tissue in boys or men and can originate from genetics, be caused by medicine or disease, or have no obvious cause at all. Men who are overweight, and as a result appear to have larger breasts may be categorized as Pseudo Gynecomastia. In either case, as a male, having breasts can trigger low self-esteem and be associated with loss of masculinity. During a Gynecomastia reduction surgery, male breast tissue can be removed to create a flatter, more defined chest.

Who is the good candidate for this procedure?

Gynecomastia affects males physically and psychologically. Sometimes, despite best efforts with diet and exercise, this tissue is resistant and remains with a full appearance on a man’s chest. If enlarged breast tissue doesn’t go away and causes feelings of embarrassment or shame, then you may be a good candidate for gynecomastia surgery. Candidates should be in good health, have firm skin and good muscle tone, and have reasonable expectations about their gynecomastia surgery.

Procedure techniques & scars

Gynecomastia surgery is performed using techniques to remove the breast gland from male patients. Dr. Mok will assess size and type of tissue found in the breast. From there, he will determine the best technique for removal, while considering the appearance and shape of the chest. During surgery, an incision will be made. The type of incision depends on the extent of surgery needed. Typically, these incisions are hidden around the edges of the areola (peri-areolar) or along the natural creases of the chest. Dr. Mok will excise the breast tissue and may additionally use liposuction to remove fat in the area and sculpt the chest.

FAQ

Men who undergo surgery to move breast tissue will see excess skin and fat removed from the area. A flatter, more masculine looking chest will be shaped to fit the natural proportions of the patient. Many men feel a boost in their self-confidence and are happy with their improved appearance.
Before your surgery Dr. Mok will explain the necessary steps for preparation. This may include stopping smoking for several weeks before and after surgery, avoiding certain medications, arranging hospital rides and at home care, and picking up any prescriptions before surgery.
After surgery patients feel some discomfort for a few days. This can be managed with medication prescribed by Dr. Mok. Bruising and swelling may hide your results for the first few weeks. Compression garments may need to be worn for 1-2 weeks to help with healing and reduce swelling. Patients typically take 1 week off work, but some return to work within a few days depending on the physical demands of their job. Results can be seen after 6-12 months of healing.
General anesthesia is used to make the surgery itself very comfortable and painless for patients. However, after surgery, there may be some pain, discomfort or soreness that may last up to a few weeks. These feelings are usually minimal and can be managed with prescribed pain medication.
In most cases the results are permanent when patients adhere to a healthy diet and lifestyle post-surgery. Significant weight gain, use of steroids, or certain medical conditions can result in a recurrence of the male breast tissue. In this case, a secondary surgery may be performed.
Gynecomastia can be caused by several factors in the male body but can also appear without an obvious cause. Fluctuation in hormone levels, puberty changes, weight fluctuations, medications, hyperthyroidism, and drug use have all been linked to the development of Gynecomastia.
