Significant weight loss and/or aging can leave patients with loose, non-elastic skin which can have not only aesthetic consequences but functional limitations as well. A common area that sees excess skin is the upper arm. Arm lift surgery is becoming more and more attractive to patients who wish to remove this excess sagging skin and fat. A more functional and contoured appearance can be achieved through an arm lift surgery, also known as a Brachioplasty.

Who is the good candidate for an arm lift?

Excess skin is present in the arms following sudden weight loss or as part of the normal aging process. As we age, structural components of the skin, elastin and collagen, have slower production cycles. This leads to a significant decrease in skin elasticity and firmness that can ultimately cause or contribute to the sagging of the upper arm. Patients who are in good health and desire to correct this sagging are a good candidate for arm lift surgery. This surgery mainly targets loose skin of the arm. If excess fat is also of concern, a combined liposuction surgery may be suggested.

Procedure techniques & scars

Arm lift surgery requires general anaesthetic to ensure patient comfort. Dr. Mok will make an incision along the back of the arm, that may extend from the underarm to just above the elbow. The exact length and pattern of the incision will vary among patients depending on the amount of excess skin, fat, and skin quality. Through this incision the underlying supportive tissues will be reshaped and tightened to create a more defined upper arm. Dr. Mok will then tightly smooth over the remaining skin to close the incision with sutures. Liposuction may be used during surgery to remove excess fat. This can help create more defined and desirable results for patients.

When are the results of arm lift surgery noticeable?

Some of the slimming results of arm lift surgery are noticeable immediately. However, it takes about three to five months for the final results to become actualized, as this is how long it takes for the body to heal completely and for any residual swelling to improve.

Arm lift surgery can have both functional and aesthetic benefits. Excess skin and fat on the upper arm can cause chafing and make it difficult to find clothing that fits properly, especially in patients who have had extreme weight loss. Removing this excess skin and fat creates better tone and shape, smoother contours, and better upper body proportions. A sense of confidence and comfort is restored for patients.

Patients can prepare for their procedure by quitting smoking a few weeks prior to surgery. Leading up to your procedure day, it is important to avoid using blood thinners unless otherwise instructed by Dr. Mok. Staying hydrated and having healthy eating and sleeping habits will help reduce the risk of complications. On the day of surgery, arrange a ride home and comfortable recovery plan for at home care.
Arm lift surgery is usually done under general anesthesia.
Dressing and bandages may be applied after the surgery is complete. Patients may be sore for 1-2 weeks and typically resume their activities after this time frame. Final results can be seen within 3-6 months of healing. Typically, patients return to vigorous activity 6-8 weeks after surgery, or as instructed by Dr. Mok.
Results are immediate and will be long lasting, especially if a healthy lifestyle is maintained. The fat and skin are permanently removed, however, an arm lift won’t prevent sagging of the upper arms if considerable weight fluctuations occur in the future.
An Arm lift can be performed with other procedures to create a more proportional appearance to the upper body. Often patients combine arm lifts with liposuction, a breast lift or breast augmentation.
