The Artistry of Abdominoplasty
For a flat tummy and slender waist

An abdominoplasty, also known as a “tummy tuck”, is usually done for cosmetic reasons with the aim of flattening and shaping the stomach. This is a popular treatment for women who wish to restore their body after pregnancy and perhaps tighten or repair weakened abdominal muscles. During this procedure excess skin and fat is removed from the stomach to improve the appearance of a flabby or bulging belly. Patients might see these concerns because of an unhealthy weight, ageing, multiple pregnancies, or rapid weight loss.

Whatever the reason may be, Dr. Mok can help restore the body and create a beautifully defined abdomen that will enhance confidence and sense of well-being.

Who is the good candidate for abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty surgery is popular in female patients, however male patients see incredible results as well. Patients who are in good health and have realistic expectations about their results are ideal candidates for this procedure. It is important to note that this is not a weight loss surgery, but rather is a solution to stubborn fat deposits and excess sagging skin.

For women who have already gone through pregnancy and have experienced splitting or weakening of the abdominal wall, an abdominoplasty can restore their body to a pre-baby shape.  Ideal candidates desire a tighter, flatter and more defined stomach.

Procedure techniques & scars

During an abdominoplasty Dr. Mok will make an incision across the lower abdomen from one hipbone to the other. Through this incision he will separate the excess fat and skin from the abdominal wall and then excise it to remove it completely. Through this incision the muscles of the abdomen are also tightened by suturing them closer together along the midline. An incision is then made to create an opening for the belly button, through which it is brought out when the skin is draped tightly back over the abdomen. The incisions are then closed, revealing a flatter stomach with more defined curves.

Dr. Mok places the scar line at the low hip level, just below the underwear line. Patients who have stretchmarks on the lower part of the abdomen may see that these marks have been removed along with the extra skin and fat of the lower belly.

Dr Mok’s signature technique for most of the procedure is the use of liposuction. To enhance abdominoplasty results Dr Mok performs a liposuction to contour the flanks and upper abdomen.

When are the results of tummy tuck surgery noticeable?

Some of the sculpting results of tummy tuck surgery are noticeable immediately. However, it takes about three to five months for the final results to become actualized, as this is how long it takes for the body to heal completely and for any residual swelling to improve.

FAQ

Patients can prepare for their surgery by quitting smoking, getting adequate sleep, eating healthy, and drinking lots of water leading up to their treatment day. Arranging a plan for childcare or household duties that require lifting or excessive motion is highly recommended. Some patients like to prepare easy to make meals ahead of time or arrange help for the first week of recovery.

Patients will start to see results right away. However, because an abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure your body will need time to heal before you see the full benefits. Full healing can occur over 1-2 years after surgery.

Diastasis recti is the splitting of the abdominal muscles down the midline. This most often occurs during pregnancy and can sometimes repair on its own. For women who have had multiple pregnancies, the abdominal wall can be split and weakened. During an abdominoplasty this can be corrected by suturing the muscles back together along the midline. This tightens the overall circumference of the abdomen.

Yes, stretch marks found on the lower abdomen, often from pregnancy or weight gain, will be removed along with the excess skin and fat in this area. This can be discussed with Dr. Mok during your consultation.

For the first few days after surgery, patients are likely to feel some pain and discomfort which can be controlled by medication. The abdomen will be swollen, and Dr. Mok will provide instructions for showering and changing dressings.  Patients are encouraged to start walking as soon as possible, as this will help with blood circulation and recovery. Some patients return to work after 2 weeks, while others may take a bit longer.

Many patients combine surgeries to enhance results and achieve their ideal body. Abdominoplasty surgery is often paired with liposuction to bring added body contouring effects. A breast lift or breast augmentation can also be combined to form a complete “Mommy Makeover” surgery.
