Any part of the body can be modified to improve its appearance or function. People who lose significant amount of weight can be left with loose non-elastic skin which can have not only aesthetic consequences but can also cause several functional problems. This extra skin can be surgically removed during a thigh, arm or total body lift to give a firmer more functional body with an improved contour and silhouette.
The appearance of the thighs, arms, and other areas of the body
Aging can also affect the appearance of the thighs, arms, and other areas of the body. Collagen and elastin loss cause skin weakening as we age. This creates loose, unsightly, and sagging skin that no longer retains its firmness and youthful vibrancy.
Firmer to the touch
Thigh lifts, arm lifts, total body lifts are a category of plastic surgeries indicated for people who have undergone significant weight loss such as occurs with bariatric surgery and would like to remove the loose bothersome extra skin. Some people experience chafing due to excess thigh or arm fat and this hinders walking and exercise. By excising or “lifting” this redundant sagging skin, the body part is left with a an aesthetically pleasing shape which is also firmer to the touch and during physical activities. Liposuction is often performed during the procedure to enhance the amount of skin removed, to improve the final aesthetic result. The choice of ideal scar location (and length) will be determined and discussed during your consultation with Dr. Mok.
For instance, during an arm lift, the incision is hidden from the elbow to armpit so that it can not be seen from the front or backside. Through the incisions, Dr. Mok removes stubborn areas of stubborn fat, tightens and lifts the underlying tissues, and removes excess skin. Then, the skin is reapplied over the new contours of the arms and thighs.
Thigh lift incisions can vary in length depending on the amount of correction that is required. Most incisions start in the groin area and is hidden as much as possible. In other cases, incisions may extend down the inside of the leg or curve around the back of the thighs.
Compressive garments will be chosen and placed on you during the surgery and are worn for 1-2 months thereafter to enhance the results and reduce any unwanted complications. When several body parts are to be operated or lifted the surgery time an often reach several hours. Depending on several individual patient factors, the procedures are sometimes staggered or staged in one to three separate surgeries for the best possible outcome for each patient.
The patient can expect a flatter abdomen with buttock tightening, less thigh cellulite and removal of excess back skin or back rolls.
Although the surgical sequence varies depending on the needs of each patient, Dr. Mok will usually treat the belly first, by removing the excess fat and skin from the belly button down to the pubic area. The abdominal wall muscle, underneath the fat is then tightened. The fat and skin above the belly button is then stretched down to the pubic area and sutured in place. A new belly button opening is made to allow the belly button to be brought back to its original position.
The patient is then turned to the side and the excess skin and fat from the side of the abdomen to the mid back is removed. This part of the operation also lifts the outer thighs. As the skin and fat are removed from the back, the back rolls are reduced and the buttocks are lifted. Each of these maneuvers is done to a different degree depending on the needs of the patient.
